Tea People Spearmint Review

Tea People Spearmint Review

I’m taking a slower pace with tea reviews this year, selecting only the highest quality ones that I can find to blog about. Among my list of high-quality teas to try is Tea People Spearmint. Yes, it’s just a bag of dried spearmint tea leaves… yet it is incredibly special. Sometimes, it’s all about the execution.

In this tea review, you’ll find out what this spearmint tea is all about, what it tastes like, how best to brew it, where to buy it, and why it should be your go-to if you’re a PCOS girlie.

First step, opening the packet. I’ve got a resealable pouch from Tea People and it does a marvellous job of sealing in all that minty freshness. The second you cut through that seal it is intensely herby with soft mint and fresh garden scents tingling your nose. You do not get that from cheap spearmint teabags!

It brews gently into a gold and green liquid with a softer scent – it’s warm, minty and refreshing in a subtle way.

The flavour is delicious too. So fresh! There’s a smooth herbal greenness that sweeps over your tongue followed by light minty notes and a touch of menthol. Unlike peppermint, which hits you with mint straight out of the gate, spearmint is so much gentler and incredibly calming.

The texture of the tea is smooth and slick but thin. Combined with the light minty taste, Tea People Spearmint has a healing sensation about it. I can feel it soothing my stomach and warming my throat.

If you are looking for the best spearmint tea you can get, I think this might just be in the top 5 contenders.

How to Brew Spearmint Tea

Generally, longer and hotter is best for herbal teas. Brew 1 teaspoon of the spearmint leaf in freshly boiled water (about 250ml) for at least 4 minutes. If you’re looking for the health benefits of spearmint tea, you’ll want to brew for as long as possible. I recommend putting the tea leaves in a metal infuser so you can leave them in to brew as you slowly sip.

Spearmint has a natural sweetness but if you want an extra boost, a teaspoon of honey wouldn’t be a bad idea! For a refreshing summer drink, a slice of lemon would also be a nice touch.

Tea People estimate that their 40g retail pack will create 30 servings, but I think you could stretch that a little further if you want to really get your money’s worth.

Why Tea People?

Tea People are a British brand that champion an ethical approach to tea – both their caffeinated teas and their herbal teas, like this spearmint. They source their spearmint leaves from the USA (most brands don’t even disclose the source) and package it here in the UK.

What I really like about Tea People is the balance between ethical, social and eco-conscious morals, and damn good tea! A lot of brands go one way or the other, either focusing entirely on educating you about how best to brew a tea or going lengths to certify their tea as organic or ethically sourced.

Tea People do both.

I’ve sifted through the tea leaf in the package (there are multiple package sizes you can choose from, including a reusable tea tin and refill subscriptions) and couldn’t find any twigs, stalks or dusty particles. It’s just crumpled spearmint leaves, impressively similar in size. When it comes to brewing tea, consistency of size matters. It ensures all the leaves (or leaf pieces, in this case) brew at an even rate, giving you a smoother flavour.

I don’t doubt the quality of this tea for a second. The uniformity of the tea leaves, the disclosed sourcing, and the verdant aroma all suggest that the utmost care has gone into selecting, processing and packaging this spearmint tea.

Spearmint Tea for PCOS

Herbal teas are often selected not just for their flavour but for their “health benefits.” When it comes to spearmint tea, here are the most talked about benefits:

  • Balancing hormones and reducing the effects of PCOS. A small study (just 42 participants) showed that consuming two cups of spearmint tea for 30 days could lower androgens.
  • Aiding digestion via anti-inflammatory and antidiarrheal properties. Spearmint has long been a traditional remedy for digestive troubles.
  • Helping you cope with stress. Spearmint is undoubtedly a calming flavour, but there’s some evidence that it could also be good for cognition, improving memory, energy, alertness and focus.

I like to remind my readers to always take the purported health benefits of herbal teas with a generous pinch of salt. Small study sizes make it hard to draw definitive conclusions, while other studies use herbal extracts or concentrations that you simply won’t get from a cup of tea.

Drink your tea for enjoyment and think of any health benefits you get as a perk!

Summary

Tea People Spearmint is a high-quality loose leaf tea that’s expertly sourced, processed and packaged. I have no hesitation in recommending it. You can find it on Amazon UK using the link below or get it directly from Tea People’s official website. If you’re based in the UK, you might also find it at some small retail outlets.
