The weather is finally turning – and by that, I mean I no longer feel like crawling into the freezer or taking a bath in iced tea. This morning, I actually put the kettle on! I am so ready to get back into warm and cosy cups of hot tea, and I’m starting with Dragonfly Golden Breakfast.
This is a simple teabag breakfast tea – nothing scary for new tea drinkers – so it’s easy to brew and even easier to drink. If you are looking for a good tea to have with breakfast or wash down a few cheeky 3pm biscuits, this could be for you.

The teabags are sealed in foil inside the box, but once you’ve opened it I recommend moving the teabags into a sealed container (tupperware or a clean jam jar are fine) to keep them fresh for longer.
The dried tea smells brisk with strong notes of tannins and malt. It reminds me a little of stonefruit. I recently wrote an article about teas you can forage in the UK which included elderberries – they have a tannic note too.
Tannins are also found in wine – it’s what makes these beverages drying in your mouth.
Once brewed into a rich red brown and muddied with a little milk (I’m using soy milk today), the aroma becomes even richer, maintaining those brisk, strong malty notes.
As for the flavour, it really hits. Dragonfly Golden Breakfast is indeed smooth and rounded, as the box states, but it also has a good robustness. The tannins add a drying touch of bitterness but it’s balanced nicely with malty notes.
Ultimately, it’s a little richer and more indulgent than your standard cup of breakfast tea, but still suited to being a daily drinker rather than a special occasions kind of cuppa. You’ll definitely want to eat something when drinking it.
How to Brew Dragonfly Breakfast Tea
There’s no special method here, just brew it like any everyday black tea. Pop a teabag in your mug, pour in boiling water, wait a minute or two, then remove the bag and add milk to taste.
This tea gets strong fast, so don’t leave it to steep while you make your breakfast. It needs a minute or two at most.
You can add some sugar or sweetener of your choice, if that’s your thing, but it’s fine without it.
Having this tea with breakfast is a great idea. It will give you a good caffeine boost and help wash down sweet pastries or hearty fry ups.
Why Buy Tea from Dragonfly Brand?
Dragonfly are a family brand but I wouldn’t categorise them as a small brand. They’re pretty well-known in the UK, available online and in supermarkets, and you can buy their teas internationally on Amazon too.
I can’t find an origin for this tea, but typically, a breakfast tea is a blend of black teas from Africa (often Kenya), India, and China.
The teabags are biodegradable but the pure white colour indicates the paper is bleached. I’ve noticed some customers saying they picked this tea because it is “microplastic-free”, but the brand makes no such claims and honestly, I don’t know how any product can claim to be micro-plastic free in this day and age.
The packaging is decent – a foil inner wrapper to keep the teabags fresh and a cardboard outer box.
What does this all mean? Well, Dragonfly is an average, standard tea brand producing a reliable and tasty yet still average tea. Nothing to complain about, but also nothing that’s really differentiating it from the likes of Yorkshire Tea, Tetley, and all the other daily drinkers in the UK.

I still prefer to sip a single-origin loose leaf black tea as my daily cuppa, but I certainly won’t struggle to finish off this box of teabags!
