Nuditea Digestive Calm Tea Review

Nuditea Digestive Calm Tea Review

I’ll never say no to a soothing cup of tea after dinner! But all those herbal tea blends can be far more beneficial than just keeping your hands warm or rehydrating you. Nuditea’s Digestive Calm is a prime example. This delicious caffeine-free herbal tea is designed to help calm your digestive system, so it’s perfect for an after-meal hot drink.

In this tea review, I’ll give you a rundown of what this tea tastes like, what the ingredients are, and how best to brew it to get a cosy and healing cuppa for your digestive system. Nuditea sent me this tea to review for Instagram and the blog, however I haven’t been paid and my reviews are always unbiased. Promise.

Full Review – Digestive Calm Wellness Tea

  • Type: Loose leaf
  • Ingredients: Rooibos, cacao nibs, peppermint, natural flavouring
  • Health Benefits: Calm the digestive system
  • Flavour Notes: Tannins, dark wood, bitter chocolate, earth, mellow
  • Aroma: Cacao, peat, cinnamon, bark, earth, mint, medicinal rooibos, nutty, cloves
  • Milk or Lemon: Honey to taste
  • Where to Buy: Nuditea

I could tell this was going to be an interesting tea from the moment I opened the packet. Most herbal teas designed for digestion focus heavily on peppermint, while Nuditea focuses more on rooibos and cacao. The initial aroma is thick with notes of chocolate, peat, cinnamon, tree bark, and earth. There’s a touch of mint and medicinal notes from the rooibos, but they are hard to catch under the intensity of the mellow earthy sweet notes.

Once brewed into a surprisingly light acorn-amber colour, the aroma intensifies with nutty rooibos notes, rich deep earth tones, and a touch of cacao. Interestingly, there’s also a light and almost floral note – it reminded me of cloves.

If you wanted a new tea to really blow your socks off, this is it!

The flavour reminds me of dark woods, rich in tannins, mixed with bitter dark chocolate. It’s earthy yet quite mellow. The flavours aren’t typical for a herbal tea yet they’re very warming, rich and comforting.

I also love that the tea is hydrating at first but then slightly drying by the time the aftertaste comes in – it’s like those last notes of flavour are enticing your tastebuds to take another sip.

Nuditea Digestive Calm proves that your herbal blend doesn’t have to be bright with notes of mint and lemon to provide calmness and clarity to your mind and body.

How to Brew Rooibos Peppermint Tea

This tea gets strong fast, so start with a two-minute brew in 100°C water (freshly boiled from the kettle). I used approximately 1.5 teaspoons for a generous sized mug. Of course, you can brew for longer or short to taste – don’t be afraid to take a sip and adjust as needed.

I find the flavour of Nuditea Digestive Calm to be really nicely balanced, with the cacao, rooibos and peppermint all adding their own touch of sweetness. However, if you have a particularly sweet tooth or feel especially indulgent, add a teaspoon of honey.

This tea is entirely caffeine-free so it’s good for late evenings when your stomach needs to settle before bed!

Why Nuditea?

Nuditea are fast becoming one of my favourite British tea brands. They care about using natural ingredients and planet-friendly packaging as much as possible. Their Digestive Calm blend arrived in loose leaf format with plastic-free packaging (they use PLA for the inner bag material). I recommend moving your tea to an airtight container once it has been opened. A jam jar is a good plastic-free option, or a ziploc bag if you want to store the tea back inside the original Nuditea box.

The ingredients for this digestive helper are simple: rooibos, cacao (nibs and shells), peppermint, and natural flavouring. I’ll admit, the natural flavouring is a bit of a let down, but the cacao nibs and shells are a delight. They give tea blends a natural chocolatey note without the greasiness you’d get from melting actual chocolate into the tea. Whittard did a tea blend with white chocolate chunks in it for their Christmas line up way back in the day, and it was definitely not a good cuppa.

Rooibos is a naturally small tea ingredient, with the pine-needle-like leaves slipping through many of my tea filters. However, the other ingredients were also quite finely chopped and a little dusty. That’s my only real gripe with the quality of this Nuditea wellness tea.

Digestive Tea Health Benefits

Let’s break it down:

  • Rooibos has fewer tannins than black tea, so in theory it will interfere less with absorption of nutrients. It’s also packed with antioxidants that could reduce inflammation of the digestive system.
  • Cacao nibs also have anti-inflammatory properties but their real benefit to the digestive system is their fibre content. However, you’ll get much fibre from eating the nibs rather than brewing them as tea.
  • Peppermint is the real star of the show. This ingredient helps to relieve gas and bloating. It’s often used as a herbal remedy to soothe the symptoms of IBS too.

As always, don’t take these health benefits too seriously. A cup of tea won’t heal your ailments but it might soothe your symptoms for a while. You should definitely talk to your doctor before using this tea or any other as a treatment!

Summary

Nuditea Digestive Calm is unique and delicious. If you want to try a digestive tea without the abundance of peppermint, lemongrass and other verdant flavours, this tea will be a welcoming and comforting hug.

You can find it available in teabags or loose leaf formats at Nuditea.

Tea Recommendation

Another tea that I reviewed recently, Clipper Restoring Roots, is another anti-inflammatory tea… but this one packs a punch! It’s full of ginger, turmeric and spices to warm up your body, ease your joints, and clear the airways. Check out that tea review next.
